And another day. Did better and I'm getting some good counts on this one, but mostly becaus I'm letting my mind kind of free-range on this one. Like I said with the previous post, I think this one is going to become a nice little character study for future work.
Snippet:
But they found graves, names burnt into stone markers: Doral, Montgomery... Perry.
"Damn, damn, damn."
"I suppose you're going to try and take blame for this one, too," Davis said, his voice gone hard. Feather looked at him and started to speak. "Don't. Don't even start. What do you say instead of hording all this fault to yourself, we do our best to put it where it belongs."
"Narada."
"Right. You warned the captain, and I get the feeling if you hadn't, they'd all be dead now."
"I know," he said. Georgia made a sound of disbelief. "I do know it's true. I'm glad something I did helped this time. That still leaves a lot of things to correct, both now and from before. I'm going to do my best to set things right -- but I'm damned glad to have help doing it this time."
Davis had started to say something. He stopped and looked pensive.
"Yeah," Feather said. "Remember that I asked to have people come in with me on this trip. It's because I know I can't fully trust myself to be reasonable on this damned world. Now, what do you say we hunt down the captain and the survivors and see what we can do to set things right here."
"Yes," Georgia said. She gave a quick and definite nod, and then looked back at him again. "Yes, it's time we move on."
Georgia stepped away from the graves and began to scout the area. Davis checked out the shuttle and appeared to find a couple things that would help. Feather did his best to just stand still and find his calm again. He looked back at Perry's grave and felt a welling of anger that threatened to over come his good sense again. He held it at bay -- at least partially. It had helped to give him a little strength, too.
Georgia wasn't gone long.
"We missed them in the storm. If they kept on the path they took away from here, they couldn't have been more than a quarter mile from us when we passed each other." She shook her head in disbelief and more than a little annoyance. "And I think there's another group following them in. I haven't found their landing site, but they must have flowing in and gone tracking them."
"Damn, damn." Feather caught tight hold of the pole and turned. "Let's go."
The other two didn't argue.
